From the New York Times Service

"A decade and a half after releasing its previous album, Guns N’ Roses plans to put out a new song in September — on the video game “Rock Band 2.” MTV expects to announce on Monday that the sequel to its popular “Rock Band” game will include “Shackler’s Revenge,” a track from the Guns N’ Roses album that has been in the works for more than a decade, said people familiar with the deal who spoke on condition of anonymity because the arrangement has yet to be announced.

The inclusion of the song on a game suggests that the Guns N’ Roses album “Chinese Democracy” will come out this fall, after years of delays. Axl Rose, who has selected replacements for the other original members, has said that the album is finished, but a release date has not been announced.

MTV and Universal Music Group, Guns N’ Roses’ label, declined to comment on the deal.

Guns N’ Roses’ plan to reintroduce its music to the public in a video game underscores how important to the music business games have become — especially “Rock Band” and Activision’s “Guitar Hero” series, which allow gamers to play along with songs on instrument-shaped plastic controllers. “Rock Band 2” will also include songs from marquee acts like AC/DC and Rush; the game may also feature music by Elvis Costello and Bob Dylan, according to a track listing leaked online. Activision recently released a version of “Guitar Hero” dedicated to Aerosmith, and a game based on Metallica is due next year."

Well, I knew it was real. Apparently, at E3 the setlist will be revealed, and MTV and GN'R are supposed to announce the confirmation tommorrow. I'm fucking psyched.

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/888/888781p1.html

July 14, 2008 - Last year, Rock Band was the only music game that enabled users to play as a full-fledged band. Things are different this year with Konami's Rock Revolution and, more dauntingly, Guitar Hero World Tour. Ultimately, no amount of features or new equipment is going to matter. The real winner will be whichever game has the best track list. Harmonix and MTV must be fully aware of this fact, because today, the two released the full 84-song set list. Judging by the impressive list, Konami and Activision have reason to worry. This is easily the greatest assemblage of music in a game to date.

The big jaw-to-the-floor announcement is that Guns N' Roses is set to debut a new song from the long-awaited album Chinese Democracy. It's not just that Rock Band 2 has GNR -- it has new GNR and effectively announces the imminent arrival of the band's oft-delayed album. Guns N' Roses' "Shackler's Revenge" is just the tip of the iceberg for a track list that features far more greats (Bob effin' Dylan!) than stinkers (Linkin effin' Park?!).

Joining GNR and Dylan are such surprises as Tenacious D, Pearl Jam, Beck, Talking Heads, and The Replacements. The list isn't so focused on spreading across decades as it is spanning genres. There's a lot more heavy metal this time around and the music from the '60s is better focused (and lacking the horror that is Green Tides and High Grass). Perhaps the only head scratcher is the inclusion of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky," which most will recognize as an overused sports anthem.

Ah, but as great as this list may be, you love your old RB1 tracks and just don't want to give them up. Fear not. All downloadable content will work with Rock Band 2 and gamers can export tracks from Rock Band 1 to RB2. That's right -- from day one you can bring all RB1 tracks into RB2 to compliment your DLC as long as you own a PS3 or an Xbox 360 with a hard drive.

And there's more. Harmonix actually wanted to toss in 100 tracks total for the disk, but couldn't get them all in one time to ship for Xbox 360 by September. So this fall, MTV is releasing an additional 20 downloadable master tracks... for free. By year's end this will mean RB fans will have access to more than 500 songs.

That is the sound of Activision gulping.

Check out the full list of tracks. Note that all tracks on RB2 are master recordings. There are 75 tracks from famous artists, plus nine bonus tracks from various bands that feature members of Harmonix.

It's a little scary that they didn't announce the release date for Chinese Democracy along with this. I hope this doesn't end up being another one-off release like "Oh My God" was.

The name of the song and the fact that it's a Buckethead solo track with Axl added in worries me quite a bit. It sounds like a goofy Buckethead title for sure. I just hope it doesn't sound like one of Buckethead's signature five minute Eddie Van Halen rip-offs with goofy noises added in and is an actual SONG instead.

There's actually quite a few songs I'm looking forward to playing on this game:

18. Disturbed Down with the Sickness 2000s
26. Jane's Addiction Mountain Song 1980s
28. Jimmy Eat World The Middle 2000s
30. Journey Anyway You Want It 1970s

listen, goofy, "shackler's revenge" is on rb2. "shackler's revenge" is on the chinese democracy album. "shackler's revenge" is the first new single off the album. "shackler's revenge" is a serious gnr song like TWAT and mystery track 2 are.  Axl isn't just added in, he puts on another great singing performance like he does with TWAT. so take your worries and stick em'

Could still happen. Maybe they're waiting for after the presentation.
You never know with GNR. Someone might find the update button on their website.

It could always "still happen". That's the bummer. I'm just not getting my hopes up until I've heard the song and read an official press release for the album. We've been burned way too many times.

I'm probably the last person on this forum you have to warn for that .
Like the whole NewGNR saga, I don't expect anything. I won't be bummed out if nothing happens and if actually something happens, it's even better cause I didn't expect it.
