Here is the review of the show I did for my school' newspaper. I'm going to a much more in depth one for this place.
On the night of November 15, a piercing scream was let out into the Allstate Arena, which was then followed by a loud, colorful blast of pyrotechnics and a loud rock n’ roll ruckus. The band creating this uproar was none other than Guns N’ Roses. To start off the show, the band played the title track from their first release of material since 1994, Chinese Democracy. Though their singer Axl Rose is the only original member left in Guns N’ Roses, the guys putting on the show put their entire heart and soul into the performance.
Opening for Guns N’ Roses was up and coming hard rock band Adelitas Way, who ended up taking the stage about 45 minutes later than they were supposed to. When they did finally take the stage however, they created quite the ruckus of their own. Adelitas Way played a set that went on for about 45 minutes, after which there was an hour between their performance and Guns N’ Roses’. The members of Adelitas Way were even kind enough to hang around outside the main arena to meet and talk to the people attending the show.
When Guns N’ Roses did take the stage, the entire arena became filled with thunderous applause and cheers. After the band got through with playing “Chinese Democracy”, they launched into a near if not more than perfect performance of their most famous song “Welcome to the Jungle”. It was that performance that showed that Rose and his boys were on the top of their game that night. Any rumors going around that Rose can no longer sing were immediately dispelled. Guns N’ Roses then proceeded to play a well-blended set of many of their classic songs such as “Sweet Child O’ Mine”, “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”, and “Live and Let Die” with a strong amount of their newer material. The band even played their highly famed ballad “Etranged” for the first time in 18 years.
Some of the newer songs played were “Better”, “Street of Dreams”, and “Sorry”. Just for fun, the band decided to throw in a few AC/DC and The Who covers. The AC/DC covers were “Riff Raff” and “Whole Lotta Rosie”. The Who covers done were “Baba O’Riley” and “My Generation”.
With everything the band did that night with all their songs, guitar solos, piano solos, and jams combined, the entire set lasted for about three hours. To end the show, the band closed with one of their biggest hits from their early years, “Paradise City”.
Oddly enough, Guns N’ Roses was pretty close to on time, which is unusual because the band has been notorious for over two decade for always showing up 2 or more hours late to the show. Overall, the new line-up of Guns N’ Roses did a very good job of playing all of the classic material as well as the new songs. Every last song was played perfectly note for note without the slightest slip-up whatsoever. The new songs fit in with the old ones very well and were just as hard, raw, and angry.
My advice would be to give the current line-up of Guns N’ Roses a fair chance. You would be surprised at how good they really sound. Just because Slash is not in the band any more, it does not mean that the band is not any good. The new line-up makes sure that the old songs are still pristine and the new ones rock harder than a lot of what most new bands put out today. Next time Guns N’ Roses is in time, go see them. You will not regret it at all.
